The Test Matches Twenty Years ago …
The tests this year have been tremendous
The effect on nerves has been horrendous
The ups and downs of summer showers
Give bigger thrills than Alton Towers
At Lord’s we lost a crucial match
Seven times we dropped a catch
That was the only difference then
A wake-up call for all our men …
At Edgbaston we just sneaked through
Deservedly and all yelled “phew!”
Old Trafford was a winning draw
At Trent Bridge t’was victory once more
The final test at Autumn’s start
Brought pacemakers to help the heart
….urge on our men in Oval clashes
To bring back home those belovéd Ashes
The Ashes Urn [written prior to the Oval Test]
The Ashes will be back at Lord’s
In the Long Room for admiring hoards
To view with pride their nation’s prize
Regained from Aussies, cut down to size
The team provided many heroes
In one-test hundreds in others zeroes
Our bowlers threatened them throughout
Knowing just how to get them out
Our keeper had his ups and downs
So did theirs to teammates’ frowns
His runs made up for certain spills
And gave we fans fantastic thrills
Our Captain led his team with guile
A great tactician with laid-back style
A professional set-up through and through
And, the fans, are knackered too!!!!
There was a great quote from Stephen Fry about what he did when Shane Warne came on to bowl…
” he went outside to count the clouds”…a lot of us did!
