Ashley Metcalfe was our final speaker of the Year at the Christmas Lunch. Lees Hall Golf Club served an excellent turkey lunch with all the trimmings and Christmas pudding to follow. It was a lovely occasion and more to come on that in our Speaker Reviews.
We then awarded some members with well-deserved honours – first of all Bryan Turner who has been a member for many, many years; he served on the Committee for some time and took on the role of Treasurer too. He is the recipient of our David Drabble New Year’s Honorary Membership 2025. This award was created in 2019 in memory of our Founding Secretary David Drabble and who was Secretary of the Society for 58 years, almost until his death. Congratulations Bryan, image one below.
Then we celebrated another member and another Brian – Brian Whitehead. Brian has been a Life Member for 30 years plus, he has served on both General and Charity Day Committees and previously been a sponsor and the Society’s photographer going way back. Brian also officiated at the Charity Cricket Day matches as Umpire for several years having stood in the Leagues and MCC matches for more than 20 years. Brian’s recognition for his service and commitment to the Society was to receive the Sir Michael Parkinson Lifetime Achievement Award, created after the death of our late President who died in 2023. This award takes the shape of a Plaque, in Brian’s name, to be placed in the East Stand Long Room Wall at Headingley. Brian was completely caught off-guard with the surprise presentation but it is well-deserved and congratulations to him. image two below
