Former England team-mates David Gower OBE and Geoff Miller OBE led the way in ensuring our annual Society Dinner was a wonderful success last night at the OEC function rooms.at Owlerton.
Geoff started the evening with a tribute and toast to former Kent & England spin bowler, Derek ‘Deadly’ Underwood, whose sad death was announced earlier in the day
A full house enjoyed the humorous hosting skills of the evergreen ‘Dusty’ Miller and the chemistry between the pair, not least when the elegant and urbane former Test skipper was impishly reminded that he had effectively brought Miller’s Test career to a close!
Kindly sponsored again by Clyde and Co, Solicitors, the evening gave attendees the opportunity to chat to celebrities including Yorkshire CCC President, Jane Powell, former Yorkshire cricketer Kevin Sharp, television sports commentator John Helm, former footballers Tony Currie and Ted Hemsley, Chris Millard (Barmy Army MD) and former Sports’ Minister Richard Caborn.
Proceeds from the extensive raffle and auctioned items enabled SCLS to make a donation to Friends of Yorkshire Disability County Cricket.
The Society would like to thank everyone in attendance, OEC for their professional efficiency and all who donated prizes. The final thank you from Geoff Miller was for the sterling work by Vice Chair Dorothy Betts who put the event together. He drew the biggest laugh of the night when presenting her flowers because he – inadvertently – referred to her as ‘the lady of the night’!
And here is a photograph from when David came to the Society for the first time
