“She made people feel valued, cared for and welcome”
A much-loved volunteer who died following a road traffic collision outside the church where she helped has been remembered as someone who dedicated years of her life to serving others.
Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Member, Norma Chatterton, aged 88, tragically died after a two-vehicle crash outside St John’s Church in Ranmoor, on Sunday, July 26.
A spokesperson for Ranmoor Parish said Norma had been a cherished member of St John’s for many years, and was known for volunteering at every opportunity.
The spokesperson said: “Norma was one of those wonderful people who quietly got on with serving others, never seeking recognition, but always the first to volunteer.
“Whether it was washing up after an event, serving tea and coffee, setting up chairs or simply lending a helping hand wherever it was needed, Norma was there with her trademark smile and willingness to help.”
The spokesperson said Norma also had a natural gift for making people feel welcome and was often the first to notice if someone needed support.
They said: “Young and old alike were drawn to her warmth, kindness and genuine interest in others.
“If someone was struggling, Norma was often the first to notice, offering a listening ear, a word of encouragement or simply her reassuring presence.
“She made people feel valued, cared for and welcome.”
The spokesperson said Norma was devoted to her husband, Pete, and that the couple had shared a love of walking, leading countless walks on church coach trips over the years.
They added: “Many of us will also remember Norma’s good humour, especially as the long-suffering but ever-supportive sidekick to Pete’s legendary quizzes.
“Together they brought laughter and joy to so many occasions, and their affectionate banter was a delight to witness.”
Describing the impact she had on the church community, the spokesperson said: “Norma’s quiet generosity, unwavering kindness and faithful service have left an indelible mark on our church community.
“She touched countless lives, often in ways she probably never realised, and the love and respect in which she was held by so many is a testament to the person she was.
“She will be missed beyond words, but we give thanks for the privilege of having known her. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pete, their family and all who loved Norma at this incredibly difficult time.
“May she rest in peace, and may her example of love, service and compassion continue to inspire us all.”
