From Joel Gardiner, Studying Journalism at Nottingham Trent University – final year
As a greenhorn in the cricketing world, my journey at The Cricketer magazine, digital edition, started as though I was stepping onto the pitch without knowing a googly from a gully. But oh, what an innings it was!
Like a well-timed cover drive, my initiation into the world of cricket journalism was swift, yet exhilarating.
Every day was a new delivery to face. But with each article penned and seeing visible improvement in my cricket jargon, I felt more at home in the crease of cricketing discourse. The digital edition, by its very nature, requires a fast turnaround.
There were moments when I felt like a fielder in the outfield, chasing after elusive scoops and stats. But with the guidance of my seasoned colleagues, including the digital editor, Sam Morshead, I soon learned to read the game like a seasoned pro. From County to Country and T20’s to ODI’s, I traversed the cricketing landscape with the enthusiasm of cricket’s newest fan and the scrutiny of a wanna-be pundit.
As my time at The Cricketer came to a close, I can’t help but marvel at how far I’ve come from being a naive cricketing novice. Like a well-bowled yorker, this experience has left me stumped yet satisfied, knowing that I’ve played my part in celebrating the sport I once knew little about.
